1. Balance airflow resistance
TCD works by comparing the difference in thermal conductivity between the reference gas flow (pure carrier gas) and the detection gas flow (carrier gas containing the sample). Two streams of air need to maintain the same flow velocity and pressure.
The resistance of the equilibrium column is matched with the analytical column (chromatographic column for separating samples) to ensure consistent flow conditions of the two gas streams and avoid baseline drift or noise caused by uneven resistance.
2. Compensate for temperature and carrier gas fluctuations
Balanced columns typically use the same fixed phase and size as analytical columns, filled with inert materials (such as empty columns or deactivated fillers), which can buffer the effects of temperature changes or carrier gas fluctuations on the reference gas flow, making the detector output more stable.
3. Symmetrical design
The reference and detection pools of TCD need to operate under completely symmetrical conditions. The presence of a balance column causes two streams of air to experience similar paths and conditions, reducing signal interference caused by non sample factors.
