5 angstrom molecular sieve chromatographic packing refers to a chromatographic stationary phase (packing) with penta type molecular sieve as the core adsorbent material. It is composed of artificially synthesized aluminosilicate crystals, and its crystal structure has regular and uniform pore sizes.
5 angstroms "refers to an effective pore size of approximately 5 angstroms (0.5 nanometers). This size is its key feature, determining which molecules it can selectively adsorb or pass through.
'Chromatographic packing' means that it is specially processed (such as shaped into small balls or particles and activated) and loaded into a chromatographic column for the separation and analysis of mixtures.
Key characteristics and working principle
Shape selective adsorption: This is its most fundamental principle. Only substances with a molecular dynamics diameter less than 5 Å can enter their pores and be adsorbed, while molecules with a diameter greater than this are blocked outside. This achieves precise separation based on molecular size and shape.
Strong polarity surface: The molecular sieve skeleton carries a negative charge, and there are exchangeable cations in the pores (such as Ca ² ⁺, the penta A type is obtained by exchanging Ca ² ⁺ with Na-A type molecular sieve). This gives it a very strong affinity for polar molecules, unsaturated molecules (such as olefins), and molecules with lone pair electrons (such as H ₂ O, CO, NH3).
High specific surface area and regular pores: providing a huge adsorption surface and consistent diffusion path, which is beneficial for obtaining high separation efficiency and sharp chromatographic peaks.

The separation of permanent gases and lower hydrocarbons: this is its most classic and important application.
For example, a mixture of O ₂, N ₂, CH ₄, and CO can be well separated on a 5 angstrom molecular sieve column. Among them, CO has a strong interaction with molecular sieves due to its dipole moment, resulting in a later peak appearance.
